Syria’s decade of conflict: Syria’s secret library

The episode is about a secret library in the besieged town of Darayya, Syria in 2016. The underground library was a sanctuary to the residents who faced near-constant bombardment. The library books inspired and kept their hopes and dreams alive.
14-year-old Amjad’s enthusiasm about his self-appointed role as chief librarian was riveting. So also a hospital volunteer’s excitement about Shakespeare’s Hamlet. I was in tears listening to a 12-year-old girl who read books and played to keep hunger at bay. She didn’t bother planning for the future as she didn’t believe she would survive the siege.

It was enchanting seeing Uzi, a two-year-old, getting his feet washed by his father. The highlights for me were of Uzi saying “good”, smiling at the camera, and trying to turn on the pedicure machine. It’s a 15 minutes 38 seconds video that will have you smiling.
