Does An Engagement Ring Need To Be Super Pricey?

My colleague is on a serious mission to find the perfect engagement ring for his girlfriend. He really wants to propose to her as soon as he can and is putting a lot of effort into it. It’s inspiring to see how determined he is, as he searches diligently for that one special ring that will represent their commitment to each other.

But wait for it, his girl is totally in on the game too. She’s firing away pictures of her dream ring at him like there’s no tomorrow! Gotta hand it to her excitement, right? Can’t really blame her for having a clear vision, I guess.

The aspect that piques my interest is the steep price attached to the engagement ring. My coworker appears to hold the belief that he must acquire a lavish engagement ring, presuming it will render a long-lasting impression on his girlfriend and obviate the need for a future purchase.

This whole situation got me thinking about the real meaning behind the price tag of an engagement ring.

Recently, I came across an intriguing guideline suggesting that the customary practice for an engagement ring is to allocate a budget equivalent to two months’ salary.

Is an engagement ring meant to flaunt your status and make others envious, or is it simply a way to announce to the world that you’re officially off the market and about to tie the knot?

Jewellery doesn’t really do it for me. Listen, I appreciate pretty things, I really do. But come on, I’m not about to let my potential boyfriend (emphasis on potential because, ahem, we haven’t even met yet) empty his pockets just to get me a ridiculously expensive ring.

I would prefer he sticks to his budget and buy me something he can readily afford. I believe our money situation will improve in the future, especially if we make smart investments. You should check out my earlier post on investing – you’ll find some helpful tips there! (shameless plug) And so, if I want a better ring later on, my spouse can get me a fancier one.

Alright, let’s get back to my main question: Does an engagement ring need to be super pricey?

Here’s what I think: No.

But hey, that’s just my opinion.

Ladies, would it upset you or make you feel some type of way if your boo surprised you with a budget-friendly engagement ring?

Fellas, are you on Team Splurge or Team Whatever when it comes to shelling out for an engagement ring?

Share your thoughts in the comments so we can solve this bling-bling dilemma!
